K9 Activities

K9HoopawActiv – Hoopers Classes & 1-2-1 Training

Hoopers is an inclusive, low-impact canine sport that focuses on teamwork, confidence, and clear communication between dog and handler. The activity involves guiding your dog through a flowing course of hoops, tunnels, barrels, and gates, encouraging smooth movement and focus without the need for jumping or sharp turns.

This sport is suitable for all dogs and handlers, including puppies, senior dogs, and those with physical limitations. Each training session is carefully structured to develop your dog’s confidence, focus, and independence, while strengthening the bond between you and your dog.

Through distance handling and independent obstacle navigation, both dog and handler build valuable communication skills in a fun, positive, and mentally stimulating environment — keeping your K9 active, engaged, and happy!

Look out for more activities coming to Oxfordshire soon.

K9 Activ – More Than Just Training

K9 Activ – More Than Just Training – was founded after many years of rescuing dogs of all types: some social and well-adjusted, others with significant behavioural challenges. Each dog presented unique needs, and over time it became clear that conventional training classes often failed to meet them. Traditional command-based obedience training felt repetitive and progressed too slowly for the dogs in our care, who often required a more adaptive and stimulating approach.

Over the years, many complex rescue dogs have joined our home. Time and again, we discovered that we simply did not fit into the typical structure of mainstream training classes or methods. This was particularly true with our current rescue, Zella — a dog whose size and breed traits made it difficult to find suitable training environments. Her natural behaviour, while characteristic of her breed, was often misunderstood and intimidating to other trainers, dogs, and owners unfamiliar with her type. As a result, we frequently found ourselves excluded from traditional training groups.

We have been extremely fortunate to work with several exceptional trainers who have offered invaluable guidance and support along the way.

In particular, Tatiana of Happy K9 Training and Behaviour

has been instrumental in tailoring her approach to meet the specific needs of our highly intelligent yet deeply protective K9s. Her expertise and encouragement have been fundamental to our success, and we remain profoundly grateful for her help. Other trainers have also contributed their knowledge, helping us to strengthen our bond with our wonderful girl, Zella — while Buz, our sweet-natured and ever-loving Boxer, has happily accompanied us throughout this journey.

Through these experiences, I came to realise that I could not be the only person seeking more than just walking the dog or more than just obedience classes. Many of us want to deepen the connection with our dogs while engaging in activities that are both enjoyable and enriching for them.

With this motivation, I retrained as a Hoopers Instructor, with the goal of offering others an inclusive, low-impact, and fun activity to share with their dogs. Hoopers is a sport that welcomes everyone — from puppies to senior dogs, from those with physical limitations to those managing behavioural challenges. My mission is to ensure that no one feels excluded and that every dog-and-handler partnership has the opportunity to thrive.

Looking ahead, we plan to introduce additional activities alongside Hoopers here in Oxfordshire. We warmly invite you to join us on this exciting new journey — one built on understanding, inclusivity, and, above all, the joy of working together with your canine companion.

Deb & Angus ~ "Angus and I were delighted to discover a new Hoopers class after our previous trainer moved away. From the outset, Tina at K9Activ made us feel incredibly welcome and ensures that every session is both enjoyable and appropriately challenging."

"Tina has a natural affinity with dogs, and they all respond positively to her. She has an intuitive understanding of canine behaviour and seems to instinctively recognise why certain issues arise, offering practical and effective guidance to help address them.

The groups are small, friendly, and supportive, creating a relaxed environment where both dogs and their owners can socialise, build confidence, and develop their skills."

Jess, Opie & Murphy ~ "I originally started Hoopers with my younger Cockapoo, Opie, because he is absolutely full of beans, and I knew he would love having an activity that challenged both his mind and body.

What I didn’t expect was how much my older Cockapoo, Murphy, would enjoy it too! At eight years old, I honestly thought convincing him to get off the sofa and enthusiastically make his way around a course might be a challenge, but he absolutely loves it.

Murphy has been carrying a bit of extra weight for a while, and despite reducing his food intake, we’ve struggled to get him moving enough to make a real difference. Since starting Hoopers, he has begun losing weight because he is so eager to take part. What’s even better is that it is improving his mobility and overall fitness. As he gets older, finding a form of exercise that is gentle, enjoyable, and beneficial to his health has been invaluable.

The best part is how excited he gets when it’s Hoopers day. He can hardly wait to get started and spends the whole session with a huge smile on his face. He has even started barking his way around the course because he’s having so much fun! Anyone who knows Murphy will appreciate how special that is, as he is best described as a bit of a grumpy old man.

He also absolutely adores Tina, who runs the sessions. Murphy is incredibly particular about who he likes, so the fact that he has taken such a shine to her says everything about the welcoming and positive atmosphere she creates.

Both Opie and Murphy absolutely adore Hoopers, and it has become something we all look forward to every week. Not only has it strengthened my bond with both dogs, but I benefit from it too. I work from home behind a desk all day, so having a fun weekly activity that gets me out of the house and moving is wonderful.

I genuinely can’t recommend Hoopers highly enough. Seeing both of my boys so happy, healthy, and enthusiastic every week makes it worth every minute."

Grizelda, Sky & Seeker ~ "There are plenty of opportunities to improve your Hoopers skills and strengthen your bond with your dog in a friendly and highly enjoyable environment for both dogs and handlers. Tina takes great care of everyone and skilfully motivates us with treats for the dogs and cups of tea for the handlers.

Personally, I’m interested in recreational Hoopers—having fun with my dogs and progressing at a pace that feels most comfortable for us. However, there’s nothing to stop you from competing if that’s what you’d like to do!"

Lorraine, Tim & Frankie ~ "We have a very excitable and energetic two-year-old Springer Spaniel who gets incredibly excited as soon as he realises where he's going—usually by the time we reach the top of Bunkers Hill! He absolutely loves Tina, and we've been attending her Hoopers classes for a whole year now.

Hoopers is a fantastic way for dogs to move around in a structured environment, engage with their handlers, and use their brains. It's also a very friendly group, and we all enjoy watching the antics of our furry friends 😊

We both look forward to going every week." 🐶
